2012 Costume Institute Gala Benefit

The stars stepped out in force last night for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2012 Costume Institute Gala Benefit exhibition of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada’s Impossible Conversations. The host of stars included Beyonce, Jessica Alba, Rihanna, Scarlett Johansson, Kirsten Dunst and more, and they all looked so fab that choosing our best styles of the night was nigh-on impossible.

But it was the old school glamour from the likes of Hilary Swank, Jessica Alba, Amy Adams and Amber Heard really caught our eye, as did the simplicity of the slicked-back ponytail styles of Beyonce, Gisele, Rooney Mara and Kate Bosworth.

Claire Palmer, from the Regis Artistic Team, gives her thoughts on who was hot:

“Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked stunning with her swept-back high-top bun, which was simple yet sophisticated, and very high-fashion. Camilla Belle, meanwhile, with her dark gothic make-up, choose to wear her hair swept lower, showing off her backless dress beautifully.

With many of the celebs choosing to wear either gothic-inspired gowns (such as Rihanna and Cate Blanchett) or, like Camila Belle, futuristic style metallics, the main hair focus was without doubt shine. Structured looks (whether up or down) with a high-gloss finish give a strong edge, yet still very feminine. A trend we will see more of throughout the year.”

Rihanna at the Battleship Premiere

Better known for her singing abilities than acting, Rihanna surprises us all by being rather good in a new film by Hancock director Peter Berg. Playing Petty Officer Cora Raikes, crew mate and weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones, Rihanna kicks butt in Battleship against a hoard of space aliens with a mighty fine haircut to match! Anna Till, member of the Regis Artistic Team and stylist at our Brent Cross salon, gives her verdict on Rihanna’s look at the film’s premiere in London this week:

“Rihanna once again amazes us with another colour change. I think the dark natural look really suits her. Whilst a very classy image Rihanna adds that current, fresh appeal too, really bringing out her eyes and skin tone, which looks incredibly radiant.

Her style here is the classic bun. A very top and in-demand style at the moment that’s being used for a lot of weddings, balls, and nights out. This even works as a day look with the messy bun which we did last year and can be found on YouTube here. I love Rihanna, she’s a massive style icon. And I think we may be getting a trend of people through our salons wanting the au naturale look.”

Kylie, One Direction and Adele at the Brit Awards 2012

Ed Sheeran and Adele were amongst the winners at last night’s 2012 BRIT Awards ceremony at the O2 arena in London which also saw the likes of Rihanna, Coldplay and Bruno Mars pick up awards. Our Artistic Team members Chris Tilley and Angela Dolan looks at the hits on the hair front.

“Kylie, as ever, looked stunning,” said Chris, of the Regis Trafford Centre salon. “She’s a classic beauty in the pop world and never seems to age! Her golden, blonde colour and loose curls, styled half-up, half-down, shone magnificently and contrasted her blue gown well.”

One Direction, who took home the award for Best British Single in What Makes You Beautiful, attended the ceremony looking very dapper indeed. Angela Dolan noted that, “With their tailored-up in suits in shades of grey, black and white, the boys looked smart and very on-trend. I loved their hair too. Lots of side-partings and quiffs which again are bang-on-trend.” With great songs and super-stylish looks we can’t see an end to One Direction’s domination as one of the UK’s leading boy bands just yet!

The star of the night however was Adele, whose album 21 is the most downloaded album in UK history, as she took home two BRIT awards for British Female Solo Artist and Mastercard British Album of the Year, following on from her massive success at the Grammy’s a week ago where she took home six awards.

“We love Adele and her album is fantastic. As she has been doing so recently she wore her trademark Jackie O-style bob in a true sixties style and her dress was elegant and gorgeous. We’re really pleased she’s getting the recognition she deserves for such a wonderful album.”, explained Chris.

Spring Hair Trends 2011

Spring is just around the corner, but the big question on our lips is what hair trends can we expect to see emerging over the next few (hopefully sunny!) months? We asked the Regis Artistic Team for their thoughts…

70s inspired big candyfloss like curls ladened with frizz is going to be a big trend this Spring – the bigger and bouncier the better! Also from the 70s the revival of the centre parting will be another huge look thats going to be seen a lot this Spring. This trend has already been rocked on the red carpet by Amy Adams at the Annual Directors Guild of America Awards earlier this year.

Spring hair is notorious for being fun, flirty and super feminine and 2011 is no exception! We are going to see lots of hippie chic with random braiding and side swept plaits – this really is the season to go all girly!

The Ballerina bun is going to be a huge look this season! Prim and proper top knots were huge on the catwalks and is going to be a key trend for the spring. They can be worn in so many different ways: high, low, sculptered or soft and flirty! This look has been seen on some of our favourite celebs but we love Diana Vicker’s take on this classic style.

The ponytail is one of the most simplistic styles and this season it’s back! Smooth and sleek, or texturised and voluminous the ponytail is here to stay this Spring. We love Nicole Kidman’s simple, yet sophisticated, ponytail which she rocked on the red carpet at the Oscars 2011!

Waves and curls are back with a bang this season! It’s all about wearing them very long, feminine, soft and angelic! Think big tumbling waves and surfy tousled locks as worn by Natalie Portman at the ‘No Strings Attached‘ premiere.

Another key trend for the Spring is the blunt fringe! This adds a dramatic and edgy effect to any hairstyle. Music sensation Jessie J is currently rocking a blunt fringe slashed just above the eyes and we love it!

Sleeker silhouettes will be making a comeback this Spring. Think the classic slicked back look, side partings, strong lines and wet look finishes are key. We love this look on American hottie Megan Fox and homegrown beauty Alesha Dixon!

The Ombré hair trend is huge at the moment and is going to get even bigger this Spring! It’s the hottest cutting edge colour trend and with celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Drew Barrymore and Fearne Cotton rocking this look it’s going to be one to watch this season. However, we will see a change in the ombré colour, so be sure to watch for more caramel colours emerging into lighter ends.

2011 is the year of the red head! We’ve seen a lot of celebs, such as Christina Hendricks, Rihanna and Cheryl Cole take the plunge already and this Spring we’ll see many more opting for ravishing red locks!

This season is fantastic for blondes! It’s all about adding vanilla hues, eccentric rose and gold tones to compliment an overall base colour of cool clean blonde, and isnt it about time blondes get a wider colour palette choice.

Festive Season Party Looks

Well readers, the party season is in full swing! Now we all know that attending that all important Christmas or NYE party can take a lot of planning – you need to find the right dress, the right shoes, the right jewellery… but what about your hair?! Well there’s no need to panic as we thought we would share some of our top Party Looks with you, created by Jayne the Style Director for Trafford Centre Regis. These looks are certain to make you the belle of the ball this party season!

Firstly let us introduce our model Amylee. Amylee came into the salon with naturally long auburn locks!

To start with we washed and conditioned Amylee’s hair with Designline Olive Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. Designline Olive Oil shampoo and conditioner is designed for all hair types and will gentle cleanse and conditioner the hair but it’s particularly great for coloured or highlighted hair and will your locks shiny, silky and smooth!

Next we wanted to give Amylee’s colour a natural lift so we applied our colour glossing service to her hair. The glossing service is very much like a lip gloss for your hair. It’s designed to infuse shine and tone together which will then spruce up any colour, whether it be tired highlights or your natural colour, giving your hair some extra oomph! Perfect for that Christmas party!

It was then time to cut Amylee’s locks! We decided to keep her length but added some layers around the crown section to really exceed the voluptuous look we were preparing to create.

After drying off Amylee’s hair we applied Designline Get It Pressed, a heat protection spray, evenly on the hair. Then starting from the nape of the neck, we took very fine sections of Amylee’s hair and began to curl them using a curling wand.

Once we had curled all of Amylee’s locks, we brushed out the curls slightly using a bristle brush and teased the hair into place before fixing with Designline Volumising Spray.

Voila the finish result! A fabulously voluminous curly look, perfect for that all important Christmas party! This look has been popular this season with the likes of Rihanna sporting a similar ‘do on the X Factor final.

We then began to create our second look, the ‘Ballerina Bun’, with a curly twist! To create this look we brushed the hair tightly in vertical motions, ensuring a smooth finish towards the root area. This then keeps the curls springy in the mid lengths and ends of the hair. After fixing the hair into place, we then teased the curls into place using the brush and hands. A top tip is not to over do it on the hairspray at this point – the hair may become too sticky and as a result will become hard to manipulate!

Once we were happy with the shape, we then fixed the ‘do using grips and finishing off with a spritz of Designline Volumising Spray!

Voila… The finished result! Variations of the ‘Ballerina Bun’ have been very popular this season with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cameron Diaz all sporting this ‘do on the red carpet!

Top Five Celebrity Hairstyles of 2010

2010 has been a great year for hair, with new and exciting trends shaping the way we want to look and feel. So seeing as the new year is just around the corner – and reminiscing and nostalgia are in the air – we wanted to give you the Regis hair salons run down of the five must-have celebrity hairstyles of 2010…

5. In 5th place we have everyone’s favourite Geordie, Cheryl Cole. This year we have seen Cheryl’s hair go from brunette, to red and back to brunette again! The lush chocolate brown tone of Cheryl’s locks truly matches her complexion and complements her classic style. Apart from a few hair disasters (don’t even get us started on the Princess Leia inspired ‘do…), Cheryl has generally stuck to the big, bouncy blow dries and glamourous up ‘dos. Well done for staying fabulous Ms Cole!

4. In 4th place we have Cheryl’s fashion rival, Dannii Minogue. This year Dannii has shown us just how versatile short hair can be and has worn her locks in various glamourous up ‘dos (we especially love her statement low bun and fierce quiff!). Dannii has also experimented with colour this year going from a dark brunette, to a beautiful sun kissed colour with honey blonde highlights, to a lush chocolate brown. Dannii’s style is classic, glamorous and sexy and we can’t wait for next year’s X Factor just to see what she does with her locks!

3. Red has been huge this season, so coming in at third place is one of our favourite red head’s… Rihanna. To see Rihanna bring back red with ultimate attitude is so refreshing! Rihanna’s hair oozes sex appeal, and all of us here at Regis HQ are eagerly anticipating to see what 2011 has in store for Rihanna’s locks!

2. In second place we have Emma Watson. This year the Harry Potter star kissed her bushy bangs good bye and opted for a simplistic yet stylish pixie cut. Short hair has been increasingly popular this season with the likes of Carey Mulligan and Katie Waissel ditching their long locks. This cut suits Emma’s face shape perfectly and brings out her features in a way long hair never could. Miss Watson we salute you for going for the chop!

1. Now it’s time for our winner… Frankie Sanford! Opting for the most wanted hair cut of the year, Frankie has teamed her crop with a sexy, side-swept fringe which adds great texture and movement to her locks. Frankie’s ‘do is sultry and chic and most certainly bang on trend! This cut is also very versatile which allows Frankie to experiment and have fun with her locks. Congratulations Miss Sanford… You have the best ‘do of 2010!

Weekend Wonderlocks

Well… What a weekend! This weekend saw the semi-final of Strictly Come Dancing and more importantly the final of the X Factor. Now even though Matt may have won the X Factor final, the all important question is who had the winning hair….

First lets come to Strictly Come Dancing. This week the show was split over two days so we had even more hair treats in store! Sadly, someone had to leave and this weekend it was Gavin Henson and his partner Katya Virshilas. Now despite being voted off, we at Regis HQ think that Katya had the winning hair this weekend!

Katya opted for an incredibly sophisticated up ‘do which went with the mood of the dance perfectly. With her locks held together with a very delicate pin, this bit of sparkle was the perfect way to finish off the look. Up ‘dos are the perfect choice for the Christmas season as they are sultry, sophisticated and chic and Katya’s ’do is the perfect example of this classic look!

Now we come to the X Factor final! Saturday night saw Dannii and Cheryl pull out all the stops with their hair as they both opted for the sleek look. Dannii wore her locks in a classic up ‘do with a low bun at the back whilst Cheryl opted for straight hair which was slicked back away from her face (very much like Alesha Dixon from last week’s Strictly…).

Sunday was no different, with both the stylistas choosing elegant up ‘dos.Cheryl chose to wear her hair in a simple and sleek up ‘do which oozed elegance, whilst Dannii opted for a low bun with her trademark fierce quiff! At this time of year, up ‘dos can compliment that dramatic Christmas dress perfectly and Cheryl and Dannii ‘dos definitely proved this to be true!

Curly hair was also very prominent in this weekend’s X Factor too! On Saturday night Rebecca chose to wear her lush locks in natural, sensual waves with a simple plait across the front. This look complimented her natural coloured dress perfectly! However, on Sunday’s show Rebecca went back to her classic up ‘do which she teamed with dramatic purple lipstick!

Nonetheless, the prize for the curliest hair must go to Rihanna. Wearing her scarlet locks in wild and bouncy curls, Rihanna certainly proved that this season is all about volume and movement!

Sadly, we won’t be able to talk about the ‘dos from X Factor anymore now until next year! However, next weekend sees the Strictly Come Dancing final come to our screens so tune in to find out who will have the lush-est locks!

Radiant Red to Bold Brunette

Lily Cole is a celebrity who is envied by many with her doll like face, and naturally beautiful flame red hair. However, the model and actress has recently been seen stepping out with a new hue, swapping her signature luscious red locks for a darker and bolder brunette tone. We asked Claire, a Stylist and Colour Trainer from our Regis Deansgate salon, for her thoughts and tips on how you can achieve Lily’s new look…

Weekend Wonderlocks

It’s Monday and that can only mean one thing…Weekend Wonderlocks!

This weekend saw the heat rising on both Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor as the finales draw even closer. So, as the competition heats up, is the hair following suit?

This weekend saw the Strictly Come Dancing contestants perform in the ballroom Mecca of the North…Blackpool! But, before any of the contestants even came on the stage it was Tess Daly’s hair which caught our attention. Dressed in a very chic on trend red jumpsuit, Tess wore her blonde locks down in loose waves with just the right amount of volume. Simple, sexy and a great Christmas look!

Red hair is also massive this season with the likes of Cheryl Cole and Rihanna opting for luscious red locks. Strictly Come Dancing also has its own red headed beauty in the form of Aliona Vilani, the dance partner of Matt Baker. On Saturday night Aliona wore her vibrant hair in a stylish ponytail as she performed a fiery dance with Matt. This simple, yet stylish up do is perfect for the Christmas season and Aliona’s colour is definitely on trend!

Another Strictly contestant who opted for a fabulous up do this weekend was Pamela Stephenson. Dancing the American Smooth with her partner James Jordan, Pamela wore her hair in loose curls which were then pinned up with stylish silver clips. This look is a classic and is certainly a style to remember for the Christmas party season.

Next we come to The X Factor. The main hair surprise this weekend was Katie’s new look! On Saturday night’s show, Katie revealed that she had gone for the chop with a new cute pixie cut. Katie also ditched the blonde and has opted for a deep chocolate brown. The pixie crop accentuates Katie’s features and is definitely a move away from the back-combed volume of recent weeks.

Style queen Dannii Minogue did not disappoint us with her hair this weekend. Saturday night’s show saw Dannii go for the stylish beehive once more. However, it was Dannii’s colour we were loving this weekend! Rocking a really light brunette with a gorgeous honey blonde running through it in sections, Dannii is definitely living up to the Yummy Mummy title!

Now a new entry for Weekend Wonderlocks this weekend – Louis Walsh! Yes, that’s right, Mr Walsh has made it into our top hair of the weekend as he is currently rocking a very trendy honey blonde colour. Be warned Dannii…Louis could give you a run for your money!

But as always with Weekend Wonderlocks, there must only be one winner and this week’s prize goes to Cheryl! The Geordie beauty steered away from dramatic hair this weekend and went for a softer more natural look. On Saturday night Cheryl let the intensity of her red locks take over as she wore her hair sleek, straight and sexy. On Sunday night Cheryl kept her hair simple once again and went for a classic up do. Her hair looked incredibly smooth and had lots of great volume and fullness through the back. Well done Cheryl!

With next weekend being the last week of November, Christmas is just around the corner and the question on all our lips is will the hair start to have even more of a festive feel? Stay tuned for next week’s instalment to find out.
