2011 has been a great year for new trends and retro-style revamps. Our artistic team runs down the best hairstyle trends of the past twelve months.

Ombre Hair

This year’s dip-dye trend wasn’t for the faint hearted, but one of the subtle, stylish alternatives to come out this year was the ombré hair effect. By using two colours, usually dark at the roots and a lighter tone at the ends, it gives the hair a subtle dip-dye effect without blowing the bank. The great thing about this look is that it’s low maintenance and easily changeable. It was an important trend this year as celebrities such as Alexa Chung and Drew Barrymore rocked the look. Have a look at the tutorial video below on how to achieve it.

Centre Parting

This centre-parting style is STILL bang-on trend and is really simple to achieve, though depending on your facial shape a more off-centre or zig-zag parting would work best. A simple, elegant style for almost any type of function, the centre-parting, when done correctly, looks amazing. Worn by the likes of style icon Victoria Beckham, the Ali McGraw-influenced centre-parting is still one hot look.

Emma Willis Quiff

Quiffs were a big hit on the catwalks during the 2011 Autumn/Winter shows and it became a favourite on the red carpet too with celebs such as Kate Winslet, Scarlett Johansson and Emma Willis all rocking the quiff at some point late this year. The Emma Willis 2011 hair was a massively successul style and her pixie cut and quiff styles she rocked in 2011 was replicated by many in the festive party season. Still bang-on trend, why not treat yourself to a fab quiff by heading down to one of our Blow It bars for an expert blow-dry?

The Beehive

The 60′s was back again this year with the beehive trend rocking red carpets everywhere. The likes of Cheryl Cole, as well as Adele, Duffy and the late, great Amy Winehouse all known for their 60′s-style beehives, it was no surprise the look became so popular. The trend this year stemmed from the catwalks, with Jean-Paul Gaultier employing it in his fashion shows, and 60′s-set TV series such as hit US show Mad Men. Our tutorial below gives you some great tips how to style a beehive.

Kate Middleton Hair

If you were anywhere in England this Summer, or in fact anywhere on the planet, you couldn’t have missed the extravaganza that was the Royal wedding. As many people were discussing Kate’s wedding dress, or Pippa’s derrière, it was her gorgeous hair, styled by James Pryce, that caught our eye. Oozing elegance, the style was a timeless classic and suited Kate down to the ground. Our video tutorial below shows you how to do Kate’s hair.

Pixie Crop

The pixie crop made it big this year with the likes of Frankie Sandford of The Saturdays and Emma Watson cutting off their long hair in favour of a gorgeous short crop. This style shows off your bone structure and sharp jawline, and can bring out the colour of your eyes perfectly. A timeless look, the pixie crop was made famous by Mia Farrow in the 1968 film Rosemary’s Baby.

Last week saw the release of top British film ‘My Week with Marilyn’ which is based on two books by Colin Clark ‘The Prince, the Show Girl and Me’ and ‘Me and My Week with Marilyn’ . The film tells us of the week that the original blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe spent with Clark as she was escorted around Britain. It stars the fabulous Michelle Williams as Monroe herself supported by the gorgeous Emma Watson.

In the film, Emma Watson shows us she looks every bit gorgeous whether with short pixie or medium length hair. Emma’s hair is very much inspired by Jean Shrimpton (the most beautiful supermodel of the 60’s).

For sleek and glossy hair similar to that of Emma Watson’s, I would recommend cleansing the hair in Regis Designline’s brand new Enchanted Shampoo and Conditioner which has been flying off the shelves in our Trafford Centre salon! Everyone just can’t get enough of it! It’s shine enhancing properties make the shampoo a must have over the party season and is ideal for any type of hair wanting a shine.

To dry the hair, I would use the Enchanted Styling Spray, for the ultimate gloss as well as some Designline Root Lift Spray to give that 60’s retro-style edge. Paddle brush dry to begin with, direct the airflow of the hair dryer in the opposite direction to that of what the hair falls.

The hair should be at least 80% dry (damp) at this stage. Then working up in small one inch sections from the nape of the neck, using a size 3 bristle brush, smooth out the hair wrapping the ends of the hair gently around the brush giving it a soft bounce.

To smoothen out further, start at the nape, taking small sections gently glide the irons away from the head in a slight 45 degree angle. This will keep the volume and bounce to the style yet still add smoothness.

Retro styles are certainly one to watch this season with icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Jean Shrimpton, who set the trend in the 50’s and 60s, inspiring today’s hair and fashion. Women are still doing it now, even in the 21st century! We continue to admire these style icons and it shows with our current class of celebrities and their looks.

Alexa Chung has taken inspiration from Diane Keaton and her androgynous style, and Adele is taking her 60’s influence from the very famous Brigitte Bardot. But behind this season’s must-have trend is Ali McGraw who has influenced this seasons must have centre-parting style.

So why not give the retro glam look a go yourself at home or pop into your local Regis salon and we’ll do it for you! We love it, do you?
