I have some great memories of this time of year, my favourite has to be the time my sister and I were excited to go home for our first Christmas after we moved away. We had to get a coach that took about 9 hours because we couldn’t afford the train! It was crazy and very tiring, but worth it to get home and see our family, and get a proper homemade Christmas lunch of course!

This year has been a rollercoaster, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had such an exciting 2012, but with the end of the year it’s time to relax,catch up with those closest to us and just have fun. With contestants like Rylan and Christopher dividing opinion right down the middle, the shock exit of Ella Henderson half-way through and new judge Nicole Scherzinger inventing a whole new slant on the English language, we’ve been glued to every minute.

Our pick for the most stylish contestant had to be sixteen year old smash hit Ella Henderson, with a powerful voice and a keen fashion sense beyond her years. She started out with a strong retro influence, moving through a series of chic braided styles throughout the live shows.

Her huge, fantasy-style bun for Halloween week divided opinion, but we thought it was a gorgeous take on the theme. Overall her style was the ideal middle point between youthful and glamorous, she’ll go far!

Over on the judging panel, however, it was a weekly tussle between Tulisa and Nicole for the title of Most Stylish. We think Nicole got it right most often this series, always setting off her wardrobe with her luxurious hairstyles to perfection.

The lads from Union J get honourable mention among the men’s hair wars, if only for Josh’s transformation into a dapper gent at the hands of the stylists – that quiff was the makeover of the series!

Love him or hate him, though, the hair headline grabber of the X Factor this year has to be Rylan Clark. Starting the series with long blonde locks, he paired his immaculate facial hair with a jet black quiff at the start of the live shows. The beard may have come and go, but there was never a hair out of place for the controversial Essex boy, and with some serious dance routines that’s no mean feat!

This weekend’s final saw Christopher Maloney just miss out on the Sunday night show, bowing out after this duet with Gary Barlow. The competition was tight to the finish between Nicole’s boys, Jahmene and James, but it was James Arthur who finally grabbed the title. A worthy winner, we think, if only because of his undeniable personal style.

We kicked the week off with some super feminine styles, with Katy Perry indulging her girly side at the Trevor Project. The combination of loose curls and a sweet halo braid provide a perfect compliment to a statement dress for formal occasions.

Meanwhile Diana Agron showed how to incorporate a floral hairband into a chic beehive, keeping the classic style youthful and bursting with colour.

If you’re after an edgier style, however, why not give tousled locks some punch with an ombre colour a la Caroline Flack? Amber Heard was the latest celeb to get the look, while Jessica Alba continues to impress with her golden dip-dye tones.

We can’t resist a well coiffured gent, of course, and Hugh Jackman was his ever stylist self at the Les Miserables premiere. With a cool slicked back look, he’s keeping his classic style intact. The slight stubble adds some toughness to a conventional red carpet look.

Kicking off the week with some stunning forties styles were Tess Daly and Miranda Hart, donning the pages of Hello and Tatler magazines. Both the ladies channeled a little bit of Veronica Lake to create that decadent glamour of the vintage era.

Elsewhere, long hairstyles took on some more contemporary inspiration, with Ella Henderson looking youthful and pretty with tumbling curls. A master of the glossy curl herself, Elizabeth Hurley showed us all how to make loose hair flawless at the Valentino Exhibition.

Meanwhile girl of the moment and Model of the Year winner Cara Delivingne went for a tousled matte look, an edgier style that was taken to the next level by Nicola Roberts’  rough and ready bedhead ‘do.

It wouldn’t be fair to leave you cropped haired ladies without some styling inspiration, and pixie champion Agyness Deyn has come up trumps. Sporting one of our favourite styles, The Boyfriend, the look treads femininity and androgyny with flair.

Our Managing Director, Jackie Lang, was there among the audience to revel in one of the biggest events of any hair professional’s calendar. Here’s what she had to say:

“First off, what a fantastic night! Once again I was reminded of why I love working in the hairdressing industry. Being surrounded by so much creativity, passion, and professionalism is all you could ask, and it was great to catch up with colleagues both new and old. I have to say the standard of work this year was phenomenal. The quality of hair on show was amazing, as was the photography, styling and make up. I really admire all of the finalists and their support teams for the effort and hard work they put in to get that far.

The buzz in the room was electric and when the finalists and winners were announced I thought the roof was going to blow off! I loved how Gok Wan articulated the strong relationship between hair and fashion and David Walliams as host was brilliant. All in all a wonderful night… and a true showcase for our wonderful industry. “

Our congratulations go out to all the nominees and award-winners, especially to Angelo Seminara who received the ultimate accolade of Hairdresser of the Year. Here’s to another year of innovation, passion and inspiration from the UK’s buzzing hair industry!

The theme this week was ABBA vs Motown – which was a little confusing at first, as no one seemed to be singing any Motown, then we realized everyone got to sing two songs each (one ABBA, one Motown, so simple). Highlight of the performances was Jahmene’s amazing name in lights – anyone watching will agree that they were totally jealous of it, and who wouldn’t be?!

Nicole was our Saturday winner in the style-stakes, wearing an amazing salmon Boudicca geisha dress, with her hair in a messy up-do with a slight quiff and backcombed ponytail. She continued to stun in Sunday’s show, wearing an elegant, close-fitting Topshop pearl gown (oh for a figure that can be poured in to a dress like that!), with her hair down in waves with her quiff still in place. Dreamy!

Tulisa didn’t wow us too much on Saturday with her grey mini dress with a long train, paired with a slightly underwhelming side ponytail – however, Sunday’s show saw a completely different woman, as Tulisa arrived on to the show wearing a very chic Victoria Beckham dress with her hair down and poker straight. We knew you could do better, Tulisa!

Best hair out of the boys for us was Rylan, who had perfected the slick-back look – no undercut, not a hair out of place, and not a movement made. He was backed by some Supremes-alike dancers, with outrageous purple afro wigs for his Motown medley – maybe not a look we’ll be trying ourselves but perfect for a Rylan stage spectacular!

Unfortunately, this wasn’t Rylan’s week, as Tulisa chose Union J over him, sending the Essex boy home (Tulisa, how could you, we thought he was your favourite!). Finally, one of Nicole’s acts is out!

The shock for everyone this week was leaked news that Christopher Maloney has been consistently the people’s favourite on the phone vote since he was in the bottom two, way back at the beginning of the show. We’re wondering whether this leak of information might be some sort of tactic by the shows producers to get people to stop voting for Christopher? Or for more ratings? Or are we being overly suspicious? Roll on next week – not long til the final now!

And with the party season coming up we all want our hair to be looking it’s best so I want to share my top tips for healthy, fantastic looking hair.

KEEP YOUR HAIR AT ITS HEALTHIEST

If you like playing with colour as much as I do you can run the risk of dry, unhappy hair. I also achieve my signature style by using heat styling, which can put hair under a lot of stress and strain.Thankfully it only takes a few simple, but essential steps to keep your locks looking thick and shiny every day.

Before using tongs to achieve my favourite loose curls, I always, always use a heat protection spray! Going without might be tempting, but such naughty behavior only ends in tears, believe me. LOVE YOUR STYLIST

Regular trims are not only important for keeping your style looking its best, something I can’t do withoutfor TV appearances, but it’s essential to hair health too. NOURISH YOUR LOCKS

My favourite hair products are those that I can use at home to help keep my hair looking as fantastic as the stylists do, so I swear by Designline Fiji Oil. I use it to keep my hair strong, thick and shiny. It’s really a miracle product, especially since my love of colour changes can leave my hair feel really unhappy with me otherwise. Restoring the lost moisture and vitamins to your hair can mean all the difference betweenmanageable tresses and a misbehaving mop, so I do spoil myself with the right treatments and pampering products as often as I can.

It’s amazing how important being good to yourself can be for your skin and hair too, so I try to be well behaved by drinking lots of water and eating well.

One more thing? Be bold! I’ve always loved experimenting with my look, and I love how fun hairstyling can be… if you make it that way!

Our favourite looks took on a definite vintage influence this week, starting with RnB singer Brandy. Her 30s-influenced curly bob is a great way to achieve red carpet ready hair without a fully primped up-do, looking great with her face shape to boot.

Jessica Biel’s hair stylishly combined the retro and contemporary at the Hitchcock premiere, pairing forties waves with sleek sides and loose curls. The result is an edgy take that keeps things youthful.

Rounding out the week for the ladies was Kate Winslet, with a daring combination of a fifties updo and feathered headpiece. We love the pin-up feel that the hat lends, proving you should always be daring – even when meeting Her Majesty!

It wouldn’t be a proper round-up without some dapper gents, of course, and they didn’t disappoint this week! We loved the vintage slicked back hair on both Glee’s Matthew Morrison and Leonardo DiCaprio, lending a classic masculinity to both their looks. It’s true what they say, style never fades!

With numbers dwindling and the race for the final becoming tight, it really is survival of the fittest… or so everyone thought. At the beginning of the competition, acts like Ella Henderson, James Arthur, Jade Ellis and Jahmene Douglas were a dead cert to be in the final, while we expected people like Rylan and Christopher Maloney to be dead in the water – but not on THIS voting public’s watch!

The upshot of people not voting for those acts they thought would be dead cert, is that Ella Henderson was voted off the show last night, after she and James Arthur were in the sing off and it went to deadlock – cue the whole nation gasping in outrage.

Though if previous years contestants are anything to go by, this was potentially the best thing to happen to Ella in order for her to have a long and fulfilling career.

We’re kinda sad about the result, as Ella’s hair has brought us much inspiration over the weeks, and we’ve been playing with braids ever since. In this week’s result show she wore her hair in a messy bun, which was supported by a braid at the front and the back – good work by resident X Factor stylist, Jamie Stevens.

Keen viewers will have seen Ella on this morning’s Daybreak, sporting her old trademark victory roll. Good luck with everything Ella, we’ll miss you!

This now leaves only boys left in the competition, so in the hair stakes, we’re rooting for a potential change to George from Union J’s style – he needs to ditch the Harry Styles messy wave and get in with his other bandmates, rocking the quiff!

And, can we say, we loved this rendition of ‘Call Me Maybe’ for this week’s theme ‘Guilty Pleasures’ – can you believe Tulisa hates the song?

Elsewhere Jahmene knocked everyone out once more with a soulful rendition of Don’t Leave Me This Way, while the always-controversial Rylan performed a mash-up of Duran Duran and Bros. We cringed and laughed equally throughout the judging as Rylan showed his claws to Gary Barlow, his meanest critic. Meow!

A highlight of the results show was Alicia Keys, who performed her hit ‘Girl On Fire’, looking resplendent in an all-black outfit of pencil skirt and a bandeau top with her hair slicked back in to a tight ponytail, held with a huge oriental-style black flower to complement her stage show.

What a week, we’ve got no idea where this series is going from here!

It was a great week for redheads in Hollywood, with Susan Sarandon and Emma Stone coming up trumps.

But the big movie event of the week was, of course, Twilight’s run of international premieres, which saw the cast sporting their own individual looks. Kristen Stewart impressed with her fashion-forward choices, but we especially loved the on trend looks of three of The Saturdays girls at the London event.

Elsewhere it was vintage inspired up-dos turning heads, with Keira Knightley looking every inch the Hollywood siren at the Anna Karenina premiere. Matching an Erdem dress with a thirties-inspired hairstyle, she looked flawless.

Isla Fisher’s take on the vintage up-do was more relaxed, but equally flattering, with loose curls framing her face. Matchedwith a high-necked cream dress, her trademark shade looked as luxurious as ever.

And no week would be complete for us without a bit of the always fabulous Caroline Flack, looking fab and fun in her snaps with Radio 1 DJ and pal Nick Grimshaw. Just look at that cuddle!

The first talking point of the evening was the judges’ entrance – twitter was awash with people gasping ‘What is Nicole Scherzinger wearing?!’ as the singer appeared wearing a white Jean-Pierre Braganza trouser suit. With her hair slicked back with a slight quiff and bright red matte lipstick, it was a slightly androgynous look. Definitely a change from recent weeks, but we thought she looked FIERCE – what did you think?

Meanwhile Tulisa dazzled in a glorious Temperley 1920s style dress, but we weren’t 100% convinced by her tucked-under faux bob, which we found a little bit too short for her face-shape. However, the style did look beautifully bouncy and glossy.

First up was Gary’s remaining act, Christopher, who we had all-but forgotten about to be honest! He performed quite a safe, fairly innocuous performance of Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’. There’s no doubt that he can sing, but is he still worthy of a place this late on in the competition?

Ella’s song choice was Tinie Tempah’s ‘Written In The Stars’, which we were initially a bit unsure of, but as ever she sang amazingly and totally made it her own – we’re so envious of her talent!

Ella wore an adorable vintage-style Alice + Olivia open-back dress with a lace pattern, and a pearl cape by River Island over the top. Her hair was down, with a really loose, soft braid in the front, which we’re sure lots of fans up and down the country are practicing right now!

Rylan performed a medley (of course) of Spice Girls hits, wearing a union jack suit – a big homage to his heroine Geri Halliwell whom he had met during the week, and subsequently bawled his eyes out in front of – classic Rylan! He’d also dyed his hair back to black – we wondered if he wasn’t dedicated to maintaining such an icy shade of blonde?

Sunday’s results show saw Nicole back to her usual form in a flowing strapless maxi dress and hair shining over one shoulder, while Tulisa wore a mini bodycon number with her hair down in voluminous waves. We loved both styles, but Nicole pipped it for us – such a classy style

Tulisa’s ‘little muffins’ Little Mix were back on the X Factor stage performing their new single ‘DNA’, wearing matching outfits, including some super on-trend American Apparel riding pants. Our favourite hairstyle was Jade, who echoed Ella Henderson’s front-braid, while Perrie won in the colour-stakes with flawless platinum blonde.

Another performance came in the form of everyone’s favourite acoustic balladeer Ed Sheeran, who we’d love to give a bit of a restyle – a definite contender for a Grimmy-style ‘Wild One’ quiff – what do you think?

In the end, this week came down to the battle of the boybands, with District 3 and Union J in the public’s least favourite. Poor old Louis couldn’t choose one, so decisions were left to the other judges as to who would go – and it was goodbye District 3. Good luck, boys!

We spent plenty of time getting hair inspiration from a host of celebrity looks, from Kimberley Walsh to Cameron Diaz and Rachel Stevens, three ladies with gorgeous different takes on blonde for the Winter season.

We had some real stand-out favourites, however, making us sit up and take notice of their individual takes on Red Carpet chic.

Emeli Sandé sparkled with her three new MOBO awards, edging out her signature blonde crop like our Rebel style. Her youthful take on red carpet style is perfect for the occasion.

On the other side of the spectrum, the luscious length of Cat Deeley’s hair looked perfectly sleek and glossy, contrasting a statement white dress. Trés chic.

We seemed to be have a real thing for blondes this week, with Lucy Davis as the undoubted standout from the BAFTA Britannia Awards. Her messy side bun created a fresh, relaxed red carpet style that suits her perfectly. You can get the look too from our how-to video

No week would be complete without a dapper gent to round out the fashion fare, and who better than Javier Bardem, now back to brunette, to catch our eye. He’s pictured receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where his relaxed style, complete with stubble, gives him a handsome and rugged edge.
