Top Five Hairstyles Ever: Farrah Fawcett

This week we’re at number four in our top 5 retro hairstyle countdown and it’s time to honour a true Hollywood hair icon – Farrah Fawcett. Best remembered for her role as private investigator Jill Munroe in the 1976 hit series Charlie’s Angels. Farrah was an icon to many young women in the 70’s and 80’s many of whom replicated her trademark golden, flowing locks.

The California girl who was born in Texas really did know how to initiate a style of her own. She had the most amazing flowing mane of beautiful, thick hair that was versatile as it was beautiful. She wore it many different ways including wavy, curly, straight, mid-length – the list is endless. However most were generally a variation of her healthy, gorgeous locks that people to this day dub ‘the Farrah’.

Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Beyonce, Cheryl Cole, Britney Spears and even Princess Diana have all worked a Farrah-inspired look at some point. Big, bouncy, full of volume and off the face is the key to recreating this look. Whether you want to add a little twist of your own to your soft bouncy curls and waves or simply want to create a whole new look, here are my expert recommendations…

1. A directional set away from the face is how Farrah would have worked her creation back in the 70’s, creating volume, bounce and lustrous waves. However, to create a quick and easy ‘at home Farrah’ I would firstly cleanse the hair with Regis Designline Get Pumped Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner. This will create the perfect base for the ultimate big hair.

2. At the roots, apply Regis Designline Root Lift Spray, giving root volume without any stickiness.

3. Then apply Regis Designline Get Pumped Volume Foam; a lightweight foam that does not compensate on volume.

4. Begin the blowdry using a size 3 round ceramic brush to create a look that’s full with body, bounce, life, and maximum root lift. MOBO Awards 2011: Jessie J’s Award Winning Locks

The MOBO Awards, the most important date for the urban music scene, took place in Glasgow last night which saw a flurry of stars take to the red carpet. However, it was Jessie J who stole the show winning Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, Best Album for Who You Are and Best Song for Do It Like A Dude, but it was Jessie J’s hair which caught our attention…

Opting for a lacy, gothic inspired dress teamed with dark red lipstick, Jessie J traded in her signature sharp bob in favour of soft, tumbling curls to complete her look.

Re-creating this look is simple! Firstly spritz your hair with Designline Hot Stop, a heat protection spray, before using ghds to create the curls. Wrap the hair around the irons and turn 180 degrees over and under with each turn.

Hair Trend: Quiffs

Quiffs were a big hit on the catwalks during the 2011 Autumn/Winter shows and it is becoming a favourite on the red carpet too with celebs such as Kate Winslet and Scarlett Johansson all recently rocking the quiff! We asked Chris Tilley, a stylist at our Trafford Centre salon in Manchester and a member of the Regis Artistic Team, for his top tips on how to create this hot hair trend…

Preparation is the key for the quiff! Once you have styled the sides and back of your hair, you need to prepare the top of the hair which will form your quiff!

Take sections of hair from the temples, going back to the crown. Blow dry the hair with a round brush moving it away from your face. Give your hair that all important oomph with a strong hold gel such as Regis Designline Volumising Gel and apply this before you blow dry the hair.

Next it’s time to start backcombing the top of your hair. Do this section by section, and use a little hairspray on the hair before and after you’re backcombing.

If you are struggling with fine hair, or are switching your style from day to night, you could use Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo by TIGI or Designline Powder Boost on the root area to really give your hair that extra grip and hold.

Once you have your height, finely comb the hair into shape and fix into place with Designline Volumising Spray.

If you are struggling to get your quiff to hold into place you can always fold the hair and pin with a kirby grip to secure into place. This look is quick, easy and will add an edge to your look!

Festive Season Party Looks

Well readers, the party season is in full swing! Now we all know that attending that all important Christmas or NYE party can take a lot of planning – you need to find the right dress, the right shoes, the right jewellery… but what about your hair?! Well there’s no need to panic as we thought we would share some of our top Party Looks with you, created by Jayne the Style Director for Trafford Centre Regis. These looks are certain to make you the belle of the ball this party season!

Firstly let us introduce our model Amylee. Amylee came into the salon with naturally long auburn locks!

To start with we washed and conditioned Amylee’s hair with Designline Olive Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. Designline Olive Oil shampoo and conditioner is designed for all hair types and will gentle cleanse and conditioner the hair but it’s particularly great for coloured or highlighted hair and will your locks shiny, silky and smooth!

Next we wanted to give Amylee’s colour a natural lift so we applied our colour glossing service to her hair. The glossing service is very much like a lip gloss for your hair. It’s designed to infuse shine and tone together which will then spruce up any colour, whether it be tired highlights or your natural colour, giving your hair some extra oomph! Perfect for that Christmas party!

It was then time to cut Amylee’s locks! We decided to keep her length but added some layers around the crown section to really exceed the voluptuous look we were preparing to create.

After drying off Amylee’s hair we applied Designline Get It Pressed, a heat protection spray, evenly on the hair. Then starting from the nape of the neck, we took very fine sections of Amylee’s hair and began to curl them using a curling wand.

Once we had curled all of Amylee’s locks, we brushed out the curls slightly using a bristle brush and teased the hair into place before fixing with Designline Volumising Spray.

Voila the finish result! A fabulously voluminous curly look, perfect for that all important Christmas party! This look has been popular this season with the likes of Rihanna sporting a similar ‘do on the X Factor final.

We then began to create our second look, the ‘Ballerina Bun’, with a curly twist! To create this look we brushed the hair tightly in vertical motions, ensuring a smooth finish towards the root area. This then keeps the curls springy in the mid lengths and ends of the hair. After fixing the hair into place, we then teased the curls into place using the brush and hands. A top tip is not to over do it on the hairspray at this point – the hair may become too sticky and as a result will become hard to manipulate!

Once we were happy with the shape, we then fixed the ‘do using grips and finishing off with a spritz of Designline Volumising Spray!

Voila… The finished result! Variations of the ‘Ballerina Bun’ have been very popular this season with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cameron Diaz all sporting this ‘do on the red carpet!
